Cascading Style Sheets
Is there a way to manipulate the layout/graphics or at least background images with css. i see http://bountifulblessings.locallygrown.net/market has a beautiful market cart and i'd like to be more creative with my market. how did they do that within this admin section? i'm familiar with css.

This is not supported yet, but it is on its way. I'll announce it to all the managers when it's ready. I do not have a timeframe yet, but it is something I'm actively working on.

thank you. i saw it on one of your sites and thought it was supported.

Bountiful Blessings found a way, but it is not supported at the moment.

I'm really looking forward to this--but because I know just enough code to be dangerous, I'm probably one of the main reasons that Eric's not supporting it yet! I assume that the only thing he has to figure out (ha) is how to make it so somebody like me won't wreck his system!

Ha! You're exactly right, Adam :)
I think I'm mere days away from enabling this feature. I've got it working on my test system, but I do want to make sure it's not too easy to bring your whole market down with some bad code. It'll always be possible, but I want to make you have to work at it to really break things.

Yep--I admit I really liked the Bountiful Blessings page, and tried to create one like it without understanding anything of how they had it worked. Basically I plugged up one of the markets I was trying to make, and had to wait to work on it, until it was deleted!

It's live! I just sent out an email to all the managers.
Here are two sites that are already styling their pages:

I really appreciate the ability to be able to create your own css stylesheet. I have dabbled a little and want to make sure I am getting it right. I want to change the background colors and the menu colors and texts. If anyone has figured out the dimensions a standard layout for this site I would appreciate help.

Hey Eric,
I can't find instructions on implementing CSS. I have been postponing formally announcing Durham Locally Grown until I can make the website look remotely modern. Have you considered implementing an across the board renovation in the look of Locally Grown? I think it would make the platform a lot more competitive with other online farmers' market platforms.
Regardless, I'd love to see the CSS instructions posted somewhere online. Thanks!
I'm not sure if this is a related issue, but it seems the market (homepage at least) doesn't display at all well on Android. I couldn't test it on an iOS, but mobile device browsing/ordering is a feature we'd be very interested in having here in Durham/the Triangle.
Best,
-Eric

Having toyed around with it, I've made some changes to our market's site with CSS: http://crossville.locallygrown.net and a friend's site http://knoxville.locallygrown.net/
As of yet there are no instructions posted for CSS because it's rather delicate, you could break (ruin) your entire site accidentally.
Also locallygrown works very well on Android (I've tested customer/grower/manager on Jellybean, ICS, Honeycomb, and Gingerbread) as well as on IOS (tested on Iphone 3GS and Ipod touch 4). Eric's done a lot of work making sure they work well with mobile platforms. What browser are you using on your android? I recommend the Dolphin browser if you aren't using it yet.

Eric, you can completely customize the site with your own CSS, overriding everything I've done. You'll find a box to do that in the "Website Customization" section of the "Edit Your Market's Information" page. It's a blank canvas, so your designer can supply you with whatever CSS you may need.
I don't use Android myself, but several of my market volunteers do, and they report no problems. Actually, I do use a Kindle Fire, and it works great there. I know there are many flavors of Android, and many browsers available for the platform, so I can't vouch for all of them. I do do mot of my work on my market's site (including placing my own orders) on iOS. I do have some usability improvements in the pipeline.
I've seen several of the other online marketplaces with their more "modern" designs. They work great if you have a nice fat pipe to the internet, but if you're on cellular, satellite, or dial-up (as many growers using my system still are -- I can't even get broadband at my own house), they fall flat. I've tried to keep my default design simple, responsive, and usable on older hardware. But I do allow for a complete override of my design for those who want to do things differently.

Thanks Adam & Eric!
The good news is that I'm still in preparation mode so I'm not particularly afraid of breaking things, but that potentiality is one reason I was suggesting we might lobby for an across-the-board cosmetic upgrade. The low-bandwidth compatibility wasn't something I had thought of.
Thanks for the tips, they will definitely help me get started!

Hi Eric,
I wanted to say thanks for allowing the CSS link for sites. It made it that much easier to customize the site for my clients at Palouse Locally Grown Market http://pgm.locallygrown.net/
However, they just asked me about email templates - customizing what the emails to their customers looked like when they went out. I told them that emails are a mixed bag, and can get very tricky when trying to do anything complex (something I've learned from many long hair-pulling hours trying to debug outlook vs gmail vs yahoo email newsletters for a previous employer). However, it would be great if you provided even just some basic options for email templates. They mentioned that even just having a plain white email background at least wouldn't clash so much with the design that we put together. So I'm wondering if you can point me in the right direction - either if the emails' templates can be edited, or simply turned off? Can you tell me more about our email options.
Thanks!
-Will Morrison

As you're probably aware, all CSS for email has to be done in-line, as opposed to imported in via external stylesheet. They are, as you say, very tricky, and it's best to avoid anything fancy.
I do provide two basic options for email templates, available as plain text linked right on the new Weblog Entry form (where emails get written). Basically, the weblog entry gets emailed out, so it appears in both places -- on the website and in their email inboxes. The templates I provide work with the default styling, but as your market's designer, you can modify them however you wish and give them to the market managers to use. I do have to provide the basic body container before it uses your template, but that would just add a little border to your mailing, if you surround your template with e div containing your styling.
It's tricky, but you do have the power!

Eric,
Thanks for getting back to me!
So you're saying that by simply making all of the styles for the weblog
inline - we can effect what gets sent in the email.
And you're also saying that you do provide several options for templates?
Where can I access those templates from?
I dug around a bit in the market's "your account" page, and I see where it
says "email your growers" and "email market managers" as well as "email
volunteers" - where do you choose templates?
Thanks,
-Will

Emails HTML styling must be done inline. Email readers do not support external style sheets.
I do provide two basic HTML templates. They are available as plain text linked right on the new Weblog Entry form (where emails get written).
