Product Names

As a market manager, how much control do you have in the item names? For instance, do you edit any of your farmers listing titles so that they flow alphabetically or in groups by name? Do you allow farmers to add * to their listings to bring them to the top of the list? Do you restrict the title to just the category name then variety (Chicken - Legs)? Or do you allow them to add details like, grass-fed, gmo-free, soy-free, all natural, etc?

I've got a few competitive farmers. Just wanted to know how other managers handle things like this.

I am super strict about this at my market. I have a short list of rules written down, but the only one that's bolded and set apart is that products named incorrectly will be marked unavailable. I especially do not tolerate gaming the names to get their items ranked at the top.

Making things easy for the customer is paramount. We are not eBay, and customers should not have to wade through a list of terribly named products to find what they want. Growers have plenty of ways to set their products apart, via photographs, long descriptions, and recipes. Names need to be clear and matter of fact. I do allow them to add details, such as "Carrots - Dragon - Large Bunch" or "Beef - Brisket - Angus".

Products are listed alphabetically, and if two items have the same name, they're listed in the order they were created (so growers who have been in the market the longest generally come first, for the more common items). Customers are our online markets are in general smarter and more savvy than the typical ecommerce shopper, and junk names turn them off. Growers who do this thinking they are getting an advantage are making both themselves and the market look bad by doing so, and at my market it is strictly not allowed.

I have strong opinions on this, if it's not clear :)
